Stories are the most common instructional material in elementary classrooms. Most books students read are stories, and most of their compositions are stories, too. A significant change, however, is occurring in elementary schools. Informational or nonfiction books are becoming increasingly important. Thousands of high-quality informational books have been published during the last decade, and teachers use these books as part of theme cycles. Children are fascinated by informational books—their engrossing presentation of information and exquisite illustrations that support and extend the text.
In this chapter, you will learn how to use informational books in theme cycles and teach elementary students to write informational books and reports. You will also read about biographies and autobiographies and how to support students as they learn about the contributions of historical figures and contemporary personalities and as they write about themselves.
